Biography:
The King of the Dead, also known as the King of the Mountains, is a significant character in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. He ruled a tribe of men who dwelt in the White Mountains during the Second Age. He swore an oath of allegiance to Isildur, heir to Gondor, but broke it when Sauron returned to power.
As punishment for his treachery, Isildur cursed the King and his people to remain as shades, bound to the mountains until they fulfilled their oath. They existed as wraiths, terrifying and unable to find rest. Their realm was located in the Paths of the Dead, beneath the Dwimorberg mountain.
During the War of the Ring, Aragorn, Isildur's heir, sought the King of the Dead and his army. He summoned them to fulfill their ancient oath by fighting for Gondor against the Corsairs of Umbar. The King and his spectral warriors honored their debt, overwhelming the Corsairs and allowing Aragorn to bring reinforcements to Minas Tirith. With their oath fulfilled, the King of the Dead and his army were finally released from their curse and granted peace.
